The book is structured into seven sections which focus on these questions. These relate to the current status of grasslands and germplasm resources, the problems facing pastoralists, the impacts of environmental problems such as future climate change, and the role of technology including biotechnology and remote sensing.

This book looks at significant current grassland problems and issues, and provides an insight into grassland productivity in diverse areas of the world, with their various production systems.

There is a focus on recent technical advances and the prospects for further innovation, through twenty-one chapters by eminent grassland scientists, grouped iCited by: Grassland ecosystems are deeply affected by human activities and need appropriate management to optimise trade-offs between ecosystem functions and services.

Until now they have mainly been analysed as agro-ecosystems for animal production but this book looks beyond the role of grassland as a feeding ground, and evaluates other important processes such as carbon sequestration in soils.

Precision grassland technology. This was combined with weather information in a grass model to predict future grass growth. Fixed wing drones with multi-spectrum cameras were also used. This up-to-date textbook of global vegetation ecology, which comprises the current state of knowledge, is long overdue and much-needed.

This is a modern, well-grounded, comprehensive and authoritative book and it is the translation of the textbook Vegetation der Erde (Springer-Spektrum, Heidelberg).

Long waves, technological systems, and techno-economic paradigms. The discovery of cyclic phenomena of long duration in economic activity is generally attributed to the Russian economist N.D Kondratiev, who in the s described the existence of long waves in the world economy. This book suggested that economic growth, combined with pollution and constraints on natural resources, among other factors, could lead to a societal collapse in the 21st century.

How would sustainably managed grasslands operate and what we need to do. Water management. In terms of water, the most important aspect for the successful sustainable management of grasslands is the management of water resources. Vast areas of grassland depend on the availability of water so that they can host grazing species or livestock.

Market opportunities can also be identified by analysing changes in the environment with technological and scientific developments generating new business opportunities. For example, the growth of the Internet and smartphones’ penetration has enabled the arrival of companies with new business models such as Airbnb and Uber.
