Usually when someone critiques the idea of book clubs, it’s scenes like this that come to mind. My problem with book clubs—it’s more of a concern, really—comes from readers not caring too little about the prose, but too much. A couple of years ago, my friend Alice and I started a book club for our office.

My query mentioned a second possible book. The publisher sent back two contracts. So auspicious a beginning led me to contacting Newbridge’s Executive Book Club about The Language of Leadership, my very first book.

They wrote back saying they would like to offer the book to members and not just offer it, but to name it a Main Selection. A community book club (or clubs!) will bring its members together over a shared experience with interesting discussions and maybe debates.

So how to get that book club started. Know what kind of club you want. Although some book clubs are general and bounce all over when it comes to themes and topics, many are specific. I hate my book club. I'm making a break for it.
